After a winter that delivered everything from a record-breaking blizzard to stretches of weather warm enough to make you wonder what month it was, spring in Door County is arriving with its usual sense of drama and promise. The orchards are starting to stir, the trails are thawing out, the lighthouses are reopening, and the lodge is buzzing with anticipation. There is no better time to visit than right now — before the summer crowds arrive and while the peninsula is putting on one of its most breathtaking shows of the year. Plan your spring getaway to Sister Bay and we’ll have the fires ready for you — indoor and outdoor.

Cherry Blossom Season is Coming

If you’ve never seen Door County in bloom, put it on your list right now. Door County’s 2,500 acres of cherry orchards blanket the countryside in white and pink each spring, beginning in the south and rolling northward over one to two weeks. Cherry blossoms typically peak between May 10 and May 25, with the southern orchards near Sturgeon Bay blooming first and the northern orchards — including Seaquist in Sister Bay — following about a week later.

Destination Door County updates a live Blossoms Report throughout the season — bookmark it and check it the week of your trip so you can time your drive through the orchards perfectly. And if you want a guided experience, Door County Trolley‘s Spring Blossom Tour welcomes spring with wine tastings, scenic orchard views, and a delicious lunch. Tours sell out, so booking ahead is a must.

Time to Rummage

Looking for a reason to visit mid-May? Sister Bay’s Village-Wide Rummage Sale on May 16 is a rain-or-shine event where you can browse antiques, clothing, home furnishings, and collectibles from sellers all over the village. It’s a beloved local tradition and one of the most fun ways to spend a Saturday morning in Sister Bay — especially when you pair it with brunch and a stroll along the bay. Open Hearth Lodge is right in the heart of it all.

One More Thing: 50,000 Reasons to Love Spring

Spring came fast this year at the Strawberry Creek Salmon Facility south of Sturgeon Bay. More than 50,000 tiny Chinook salmon got an early and unexpected start to their journey when floodwaters from heavy spring rains helped carry them out of their holding pond — a full month ahead of schedule. Strawberry Creek has been Wisconsin’s primary source of Chinook salmon eggs for Lake Michigan stocking since 1969 — a remarkable corner of the Door County story that most visitors never know about.
